The U-Ranking<\/span><\/span><\/a> index\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0is constructed from 20 indicators grouped into two dimensions: teaching and research and innovation. The ranking includes universities that have data available for at least 18 of these 20 indicators. The data used comes from public information systems and statistics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The UMH, the only university in the province among the 40 with the highest employment rates in Spain<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

VALENCIA. The employment of graduates remains a challenge for public and private universities in the Valencian Community. According to a ranking by the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (IVIE) and the BBVA Foundation,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>no university in this region ranks among the top ten in Spain for graduate employability, and only one, the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), appears in the top twenty<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0. Once again, the data reflects the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>importance of economic differences between regions<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , as fifteen of the twenty best universities in terms of employment are located in the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Navarre.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is according to this year’s U-Ranking study, prepared by the two aforementioned entities, which, unlike the list published in 2022, offers an analysis of the employment rates of graduates from Spanish universities, going beyond other rankings based on teaching performance or research and innovation.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>To measure employability, the report uses three variables from the Social Security system<\/span><\/span><\/strong> : the employment rate of graduates from ten years ago, their average contribution base to measure remuneration, and the match between their level of education and their job position.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Based on these indicators and the total number of graduates, an index has been constructed which concludes that\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica is the best-positioned Valencian institution, with an employment rate of 76.1% and an annual gross salary of \u20ac26,845<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , placing it seventeenth overall with an index of 1.07. Following behind, in twenty-fourth and twenty-sixth positions respectively, are two private universities:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cardenal Herrera-CEU<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(1.05) and the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Catholic University of Valencia<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(1.04). Meanwhile, the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University of Elche<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(1.01) ranks thirty-seventh in Spain in terms of employability, while the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>University of Valencia<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(1),\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Jaume I University of Castell\u00f3n<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(0.98), and the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>University of Alicante<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(0.98) are all ranked beyond fiftieth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, the IVIE and BBVA Foundation report itself emphasizes that factors such as teaching performance or research potential are not the most influential in defining employability. Rather,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>its outcome is more closely related to specialized training in fields with high demand for professionals<\/span><\/span><\/strong> . This would mean that polytechnic centers are, on average, better positioned than the rest, given their focus on computer science and engineering, as is the case at the regional level with the UPV and the other Valencian universities. But beyond these factors, the social environment also matters a great deal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In fact, the study emphasizes that\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>many of the universities achieving good employability results are located in regions with high levels of wealth or are private<\/span><\/span><\/strong> . Therefore, these types of variables, more closely linked to the social and productive ecosystem of each autonomous community than to issues the universities themselves can control, are highly relevant when it comes to finding a job. Thus, the Community of Madrid, defined by the report as the region “that absorbs the most human capital,” has seven universities among the twenty with the best job placement rates, and only two of them are public. The presence of regions like Catalonia, Navarre, and the Basque Country also reinforces this idea.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the data for Spain as a whole, it is also evident how these factors influence the rankings of universities within their own autonomous communities. It is therefore not surprising that\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>in the Valencian Community, the three highest-ranked universities are located in the city of Valencia, and two of them are private<\/span><\/span><\/strong> . Conversely, among the ten universities with the lowest graduate employment rates analyzed by the IVIE and the BBVA Foundation, the University of Alicante appears alongside five Andalusian universities and one from Murcia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These data also align with the employment situation of young people aged 22 to 26 with university degrees, broken down by autonomous community, as also provided in the report. In this regard, the regions with the highest employment rates are Catalonia (73.8%), the Community of Madrid (73.5%), and Navarre (72.7%), while Andalusia (46.1%), Galicia (48.3%), and Extremadura (49.9%) are at the opposite end of the spectrum.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>In the Valencian Community, the rate stands at 56.3%, a figure that is lower than the Spanish average (56.3%)<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and lags behind the rate in ten other autonomous communities. Furthermore, 39% of young Valencians had permanent contracts, and over 64% were in jobs requiring qualifications.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

University performance\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the 2023 U-Ranking global classification, which takes into account both the teaching activity of the centers and their performance in research and innovation,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>again places the Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia as the best positioned Valencian university in terms of performance<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> , tied with the Autonomous University of Barcelona with an index of 1.4 and only behind the Carlos III of Madrid, the Polytechnic of Catalonia and the Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The next institution in the Valencian Community is the University of Valencia (1.2), followed by the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University of Elche, the Jaume I University of Castell\u00f3n (UJI), and the University of Alicante (UA)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> , all with an index of 1.1. Meanwhile, the Valencian institutions with the worst rankings in this regard are the private ones, which contrasts sharply with their performance in terms of job placement. Thus, the Cardenal Herrera-CEU University (0.7), the Catholic University of Valencia (0.6), the International University of Valencia (0.5), and the European University of Valencia (0.5) are among the lowest-ranked institutions in this category.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding specific rankings,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the UPV is once again the top-ranked institution in the Valencian Community for teaching, leading the national list <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0as it did in 2022<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> , and is also among the top ten in research and innovation. Meanwhile, the UV ranks seventh in research, tied with four other institutions, and achieves the third-best index in teaching, alongside seventeen other academic institutions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among the other public universities, Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University of Elche and the Jaume I University (UJI) share the third-best teaching index with eighteen other institutions and the eighth-best in innovation, a position also achieved by the University of Alicante. Furthermore, the IVIE and BBVA Foundation study awards the University of Alicante the fourth-best indicator in terms of teaching performance, a position also held by twenty-three other universities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The UMH stands out in teaching and learning in Medicine, according to the CyD Foundation’s university ranking<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche is ranked first in the Valencian Community and second nationally in the creation of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>spin-offs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> \u00a0or technology-based companies originating on campus, according to the tenth edition of the ranking by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CyD). The UMH also ranks second among Valencian public universities and third nationally in licensing revenue within the ‘Knowledge Transfer’ category.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to this study, the UMH also excels in other areas, both nationally and regionally. Specifically, in the field of ‘Research,’ the University ranks 2nd in the Valencian Community and 10th nationally in “Publications per Faculty Member.” Finally, in the area of \u200b\u200b”Teaching and Learning,” the UMH holds the top position regionally in “Master’s Graduation Rate” and in “Students from other Autonomous Communities (Master’s Programs).”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the UMH is positioned with high performance at the national level in the following sections: in Students from other Autonomous Communities (Degree), in Research Periods, in External Research Funds (Liquidated), in Post-Doctorate, in Patents Granted by Professor, in Private Funds (Liquidated) and in Publications Cited in Patents.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The CyD Ranking analyzes the results of 29 fields of study and 3,266 degree programs from 80 universities. The CyD Foundation aims to analyze and promote the contribution of universities to development, foster entrepreneurship in Spanish society, and strengthen ties between universities and businesses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche is positioned among the 10 best Spanish universities in the area of \u200b\u200bMedicine, in several of the indicators within the areas of ‘Teaching and Learning’, ‘Research’, ‘Knowledge Transfer’, ‘International Orientation’ and ‘Employment Insertion’, according to the tenth edition of the ranking of the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CyD).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Specifically, within the ‘Teaching and Learning’ criteria, UMH appears as the 2nd best Spanish university with the best qualification of the teaching staff, as well as the 8th institution with the average access grade and the highest 3rd national university with the best student-to-faculty ratio.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Also of particular note are the high-performance results obtained in the areas of ‘Research’ and ‘Knowledge Transfer’. The UMH ranks 6th nationally in the number of doctoral theses defended in Medicine and 3rd in revenue from licenses, respectively.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to this study, UMH also ranks among the top universities in the ‘International Orientation’ indicator for Medicine. The University is ranked 4th in ‘Doctoral Theses by International Students’ and 8th in ‘International Faculty’. The\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>GreenMetric<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> \u00a0Ranking of World Universities 2022 has released its updated university sustainability ranking. This edition places the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche at number 175 in the world, out of a total of 1,050 universities from 85 different countries. Nationally, the UMH ranks 9th out of the 29 participating universities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia, launched in 2010, which evaluates more than fifty indicators of academic institutions, divided into six categories: environment and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water and transport, and education and research. The UMH\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> website\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>ranks <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0first in web accessibility<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0among Spanish public universities, according to the 2022 report on web accessibility monitoring submitted to the European Commission. The 2022 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Areas in Universities (GRAS) places the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche among the top 200 universities in the world in the area of \u200b\u200bFood Science and Technology. This ranking classifies more than 1,800 universities in 96 countries, analyzing 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The ranking measures scientific productivity in the different academic areas but does not evaluate the quality of teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the UMH excels nationally in disciplines related to Health Sciences, reinforcing its prominent profile in this area. The Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche ranks among the top 10 Spanish universities in several indicators within the fields of Research and Knowledge Transfer, according to the ninth edition of the ranking by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CyD). Furthermore, at the regional level, the UMH stands out among the top performers in the areas of Teaching and Learning, Research, and Knowledge Transfer. The CyD Ranking analyzes the results of 28 fields of knowledge and 3,052 degree programs across 79 universities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically, UMH ranks among the top 10 Spanish universities in the ‘Publications per Professor’ category, with 4.26 publications per full-time Teaching and Research Staff (PDI), and among the top 20 Spanish universities in the ‘External Research Funding’, ‘Open Access Publications’, ‘Postdoctoral Fellowships’, and ‘Research Periods’ categories. Specifically, the UMH has continued to lead this parameter in the Valencian Community in recent years with an average of 1.38 technology-based companies created per 100 teaching and research staff, compared to the average for all public universities in the Valencian Community (0.17).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The CyD Foundation study does not list the position of each university globally, but it does study the main indicators, which are ‘Teaching and Learning’, ‘Research’, ‘Knowledge Transfer’, ‘International Orientation’ and ‘Regional Contribution’, which in turn are divided into different sections.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Climate change is largely due to human activity, and it is essential that we all take responsibility for actions that modify our lifestyles and consumption habits. In this regard,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>education plays a vital role in the collective response to climate change<\/span><\/span><\/strong> . It helps us understand and address its consequences, encourages changes in attitudes and behaviors, and prepares future professionals to confront and transform the reality of the imminent impact of this environmental problem. To mark\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>World Climate Day, we analyze the commitment of universities to addressing climate change<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , the scores of Spanish institutions in the Impact Rankings, and specifically, their performance on the Sustainable Development Goals most closely aligned with climate issues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Declared by the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, World Climate Day (March 26)<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0aims to raise awareness and educate people about the importance and influence of climate, as well as the impact of climate change on humanity. Since 2009, 350 organizations worldwide have commemorated this day, which reminds us how to act against a phenomenon that has affected us since the 1950s, when the effects of global warming began to become more evident.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In parallel, but also as a complement,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Earth Hour<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0(an initiative that originated in Sydney and was conceived by the World Wide Fund for Nature) has been promoted on March 26th since 2007 as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the problems of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>global warming, energy consumption, and biodiversity loss<\/span><\/span><\/strong> . This initiative, now in its sixteenth year, has seen thousands of cities in nearly 200 countries switch off the lights of more than 17,000 iconic buildings and monuments for one hour.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this path of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>raising awareness, higher education plays a crucial role, and the university is an ideal space to realize this<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> , given its mission in the training and education of future professionals. These professionals will need to confront, from a transformative and proactive position, the challenges posed by climate change in different contexts (social, economic, cultural, and political). Furthermore, this process is not limited to any one particular area; On the contrary,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>it concerns all spheres, so that professionals can make the necessary contribution to adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For education to unleash its transformative potential, modifications to the current model are necessary. In this regard, the European Green Deal has taken a significant step by announcing a\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>new framework of university competencies on climate change and sustainable development<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> . In Spain, the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law (May 21, 2021), which requires the global and multilateral involvement of public administrations, private institutions, and civil society in general, moves in the same direction. Specifically, it mandates that universities review the treatment of climate change in their degree programs. Furthermore, the law emphasizes the need to\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>guarantee teacher training and decisively promote research on this subject.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The commitment of universities to climate change<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Within this context of commemorative data, we have compiled a list of the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Spanish universities that achieve the highest scores in the Impact Ranking (compiled by Times Higher Education)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0to analyze the involvement and commitment of higher education institutions to sustainability and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Institute for Disability Research, Policy and Practice at Utah State University (USA) conducted the ‘WebAIM Million’ ranking in February 2019, 2020, and 2021, which it publishes through its website,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>webaim.org<\/span><\/span><\/a> . To compile this ranking, a web accessibility assessment was performed on the homepages of 1,000,000 major websites worldwide. The million homepages were selected from various sources, primarily from the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Majestic Millions<\/span><\/span><\/a> list , which includes sites such as google.com, facebook.com, youtube.com, twitter.com, and instagram.com, among the top five.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The web accessibility assessment was performed using the independent automated tool ( <\/span><\/span>WAVE<\/span><\/span><\/a> ) and the results provide an overview, a perspective on the current state of web accessibility for people with disabilities and trends over time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the 2019 ranking, the UMH homepage was in position 307,379, while in 2020 it was in position 229,780, meaning that accessibility has decreased from 30.74% in 2019 to 22.98% in 2020, and now to 4.05% in 2021. This improvement in the accessibility of the UMH homepage is due to the dedicated efforts of the web technicians of the UMH Innovation and Technological Planning Service, which reports to the Vice-Rectorate for Information Technologies. This service has been working for years to improve web accessibility, culminating in the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>launch of the new website<\/span><\/span><\/a> \u00a0on July 2, 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The latest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking places the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche among the top 200 young universities in the world. Specifically, the UMH holds the 192nd position globally and the 9th position nationally; while at the regional level it is the top-ranked young university, followed by the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) and the University of Alicante (UA).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Times Higher Education (THE) Young Universities Ranking 2021 lists the world’s best universities under 50 years old. In total, the tenth edition of this report includes 450 universities from more than 68 countries. The methodology used is based on 13 performance indicators that represent different university activities (teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalization). The aim of this study is to provide a forward-looking perspective and showcase young universities with great potential. To this end, the weighting of the indicators has been adjusted to give less weight to reputation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically, the UMH stands out as the second-ranked of Spain’s younger universities in terms of teaching quality, ninth in terms of resources obtained from private industry, and twelfth in terms of the number of citations indexed in bibliographic databases. Furthermore, the UMH currently holds a position between 601 and 800 in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which includes all universities worldwide regardless of their age.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the results of the ranking of Spanish universities participating in the 30 Days by Bike Challenge, the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University (UMH) of Elche ranks 7th among Spanish universities. This initiative, which took place from April 1st to 30th, is promoted by Ciclogreen to encourage a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In total, 26,153 km have been covered, contributing to a saving of 6,538 kg of CO2. Participants from UMH have covered a total of 1,025 km. Generally, the kilometers accumulated by each university have been lower than in previous challenges due to the decrease in foot traffic on university campuses, but the increase in participating universities (from 10 to 17) reflects the growing concern for more sustainable and emission-free mobility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

U-Ranking of Spanish Universities. Teaching, Research and Innovation<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The U-Ranking 2021 document (Synthetic Indicators of the Spanish University System) presents the ninth edition of the results of universities in their teaching, research and innovation activities, offering an ordering of the institutions for each area and for the set of university activities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This document describes the methodology developed for the construction of the variables and indicators that serve as the basis for the different classifications and analyzes in detail the two types of rankings constructed, performance (U-Ranking) and volume of results (U-Ranking Volume).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The ninth edition of U-Ranking includes the 48 public and 24 private universities for which sufficient and high-quality data exists to ensure consistent treatment with public universities in the calculation of composite indicators.
